Das Kölner Dreigestirn
Karnevalsumzug in Köln
The Fifth Season has started
Since Thursday the carnival revellers has been
celebrating the fifth season in all cities along the Rhine in Germany. The so
called fifth season is also known as ‘Fastnacht’ or ‘Karnival’. The whole party
has started on Thursday last week at 11:11 o’clock. This Thursday, known as,
‘Weiberdonnerstag’ (Weib = an old German word for ‘Frau’), was the starting
shot for the German street
carnival. Now everybody is dancing, singing, drinking and laughing on the
streets until Ash Wednesday. The so called carnival strongholds are Cologne, Mainz
and many other cities in Hessen. The traditional Rose Monday is the day on
which carnival parades take place in many cities. Tuesday is the last day of
carnival. On this day you finally have to say goodbye to this long lasting
party. At midnight it finally happens: the personification of carnival is burnt
in form of a big straw doll according to the proverb: on Ash Wednesday everything
is finished!
