Nach dem Rücktritt des
amtierenden Bundespräsidenten Christian Wulff hat Deutschland zurzeit kein
Staatsoberhaupt. Nach vielen Skandalen hat Wulff Mitte Februar endlich seinen
Rücktritt bekannt gegeben. Niemand trauert um den gestürzten Bundespräsidenten.
Im Gegenteil, viele sind der Meinung, dass er sich mit seinem Rücktritt zu viel
Zeit gelassen hat.
Am 18. März finden nun Neuwahlen
statt. Die Kandidaten sind Joachim Gauck, ein 72-jähriger Politiker aus Rostock,
und Beate Klarsfeld, eine 73-jährige Journalistin aus Berlin. Der
Bundespräsident wird von der Bundesversammlung gewählt. Die Bundesversammlung
besteht aus der Bundesregierung und aus den Vorsitzenden der Landesparlamente
der 16 Bundesländer, den so genannten Ministerpräsidenten. Die Wahl ist
gewonnen, wenn ein Kandidat die absolute Mehrheit erreicht hat. Dann kann der
neue Präsident / die neue Präsidentin laut Gesetzt das Amt für maximal fünf
Jahre ausführen. Danach wird ein neuer Präsident gewählt. Ein Kandidat kann
höchstens zweimal gewählt werden, d.h. es ist nicht möglich länger als zehn
Jahre das Amt des Bundespräsidenten inne zu haben.

Politics: Election of the Federal President in Germany
Currently Germany does not have a head of
state after the resignation of the current Federal President Christian Wulff.
After many scandals, finally Wulff announced in mid-February that he would be
quitting. Nobody is mourning for the overthrown President. On the contrary,
many people think that he took to much time with quitting the office.
On 18 March, new elections are taking place. The
new candidates are Joachim Gauck, a 72-year-old politician from Rostock and Beate Klarsfeld, a 73-year-old journalist from
Berlin. The
Federal President is elected by the Federal Assembly which consists of the
Federal Government and the chairmen of the state parliaments of the 16 Federal
States (each state has its own state parliament). These chairmen are called
Governors.
The election is won when one of the candidates
has received absolute majority. According to the law, the new President is allowed
to execute the office for five years. After these five years a new President is
being elected. A candidate can only be elected twice, that means it is not
possible to hold the office of the Federal President for more than ten years.
